EXEMPTIONS FOR FAMILY MEMBERS
Relatives for whom you pay more than half of their support may qualify as exemptions if other criteria are met: They must be less than 19 years old, or full-time students under age 24, or earn less than $3,000 annually.
If several family members share the support of a relative and none individually pays more than half, no one individual may claim the relative. Consider either designating one member to pay the majority of support and take the exemption, or filing a multiple support agreement.
Use the basic exemption amount of $3,400 when calculating your 2007 federal income taxes. It applies to the exemption for you, your spouse, and your dependents. However, a phase-out of these exemptions begins after an AGI threshold is reached depending on your filing status.
